The collector that has been waiting for a superb quality Proof 1937 Crown should look no further than this coin. It is the finest that we have handled – and indeed ever sighted.
The coin has a magnificent pale blue hue that is seldom seen. That hue is a ‘quality indicator’ and is evident in Melbourne Mint proofs but only when they are at their very best. (The same bluish hue was evident in the silver proofs of the 1934 Set that sold in New York in 2010 and which established a new world record price.)
No surprise therefore that this particular Crown is also a record breaker setting a new price level at auction when it first appeared a few years ago.
As a proof it also is extremely rare. With an original mintage of 100 pieces, we would sight maybe one or two examples at auction annually. Factor in the exceptional quality of this coin and you will be waiting years to find a comparable piece. And then at what price?
As a final comment, the Proof 1937 Crown was a commemorative issue struck at the Melbourne Mint to celebrate the crowning of King George VI.
While the Melbourne Mint struck circulating coins for Treasury in each of the 38 years between 1916 and 1953, proofs were only struck to sell to collectors in eight of those years. (See table below)
The 1937 Proof Crown was one such ‘commercial’ proof striking making it a highly significant and historically important issue.
