Banknotes

1966 - 1992 Decimal Paper Notes

Decimal Paper Banknotes (1966 - 1992)Australia changed to decimal currency in 1966, settling on the dollar as the principle unit after much discussion. Of the many designs submitted, those of Gordon Andrews, a Sydney graphic designer, were selected.

The 10/- became $1, £1 equalled $2, £5 became $10 and £10 became $20, and in 1967 the $5 denomination was introduced. By 1973 there emerged a need for a $50 note and the $100 note was introduced in 1984.

Star replacement notes continued to be used for printing errors until 1972 when electronic counting and scanning removed marked errors and issued sections of 100 pieces irrespective of serial numbers. These star notes are eagerly sought by collectors, especially in high grade. The decimal series lends itself to various methods of collecting, by type, signature and by prefix.
